Ref: Brief Sketch of Some
Glisson Families in Georgia-
By Phillip L. Glisson--
Abraham Glisson b. bef 1750 d. bef 1798 of Duplin Co. NC & Burke Co. GA. Wife may have been Martha. Abraham was definitely brother of Frederick and both were younger children of Dennis of Tyrrell, Beaufort and Duplin Co. NC. Abraham was listed in the following records, 1776 land purchase in Duplin Co. NC from Andrew Gufford (his brother-in-law) witnessed by Frederick & John Glisson, 1777 witness land sale in Duplin Co. NC, 1778 land purchase in Duplin Co. NC, 1779 witnessed land sale in Duplin Co. NC, 1781 land purchase in Duplin Co. NC, 1782 land puchase witnessed by Dennis Glisson in Duplin Co. NC, 1784 land sale in Duplin Co. NC, 1785 land sale to James Chambers (his brother-in-law) in Duplin Co. NC, 1787 land purchase in Burke Co. GA witnessed by Frederick & Dennis Glisson, 1790 reconstructed census, 1791 listed in Burke Co. GA headrights & bounty land. In 1798 Frederick, Dennis and a Martha listed in separate households in Burke Co. GA. I believe this Martha was widow of Abraham. The following is a possible list of children of Abraham: Dennis, Joseph, James, John B. and probably more. Actually these children could be Abrahams or Fredericks it is hard to tell because of all the Georgia records that were destroyed in the Civil War.
Frederick Glisson b. bef 1750 d. aft 1798 of Duplin Co. NC & Burke Co. GA. Abraham & Frederick were 2 of the younger children of Dennis Glisson of Tyrrell, Beautfort & Duplin Co. NC. His wife may have been Tilly or Dilly b. bef 1775 who was listed in 1820 Census of Burke Co. GA. Frederick was listed in the following records, 1776 Frederick and his brother John witnessed land purchase of brother Abraham in Duplin Co. NC, 1779 land purchased from father Dennis Glisson in Duplin Co. NC, 1782 land sale to his brother Michael in Duplin Co. NC, 1782 land purchase in Duplin Co. NC witnessed by Dennis & Michael Glisson, 1783 land sale in Duplin Co. NC, 1787 land purchase witnessed by Abraham & Dennis Glisson in Burke Co. GA, 1788 listed as 1st Lt in militia of Burke Co. GA, 1790 reconstructed Census of Burke Co. GA, 1797 listed headright & bounty lands in Burke Co., 1798 listed as head of household in tax digest in Burke Co. GA. Frederick may have went back to Duplin Co. NC. The following is a list of possible children of Frederick: Pheroh, John?, Joseph?, and probably more. Actually these children could be Fredericks or Abrahams.
Pheroh Glisson b.1776-1794 m.
to ? b.1776-1794 of Burke Co. GA, the only record for him is the 1820 Census
and 1824 tax list for Burke Co. GA. This census listed 1m-26-44, 1f-26-44,
1f16-25, 1munder 10.
Pheroh could be another possible son of either
Frederick or Abraham or the name Pheroh could be a nickname for one of the
others. One thing to think about is that Frederick the Great was nicknamed
Pheroh and thus this Pheroh could be a Frederick. No other records on him or
his family to date.
James Glisson b. bef 1770 d. 1814-20 son of either Abraham or Frederick. There was a marriage record submitted in the Mormon Church IGI files stating that James Glisson married Martha Dykes on 4 July 1799 in Effingham Co. George Wylie Glisson stated that the actual marriage was James Garrison to Martha Dykes? It is more likely that the Lidia that was listed in the 1820 Census for Burke Co. & 1824 tax list for Burke Co. was his widow. This census list 1f26-44, 4funder10 and 2munder10, and listed a m45 &on who could have been her father, brother, other relative or not even related. James & Lydia Glisson listed as members of the Beech Branch Baptist Church 1803-1845 now present day Sardis Baptist Church. I believe this was the James Glisson who left the orphans, Mary, Nathan, Amos, Martha, and Bathsheba. Land in Early Co. GA was won in the 1820 land lottery for James deceased. Nathan (Nathaniel Mathew Glisson) being the oldest son of James sold this land in 1837 to Ezekiel O. Pierce. The part of Early Co. that the land was in became Baker Co. by 1837. I do not know what happened to James' widow or to Mary, Amos & Martha and possibly another female. Nathan and sister Barsheba m. William Wilkins wound up in Walton Co. FL, Holmes Co. FL and Henry Co. AL. Nathan also in Tyler Co. TX 1870 and 1880 census. Martha m. John Wilkins Jr. listed in 1840 Henry Co. AL I listed James's family with the Florida Glisson Family group. James listed in the following records, 1792 James listed as tax defaulter in Burke Co., 1796 James purchased land formerly land of Abraham Glisson in Burke Co., 1798 James Glisson listed in tax digest Burke Co., 1801 James Glisson listed Burke Co. Headright & Bounty Grants, 1805 James Glisson listed land lottery Burke Co., 1807 James Glisson of Burke Co. sold land won in land lottery in Baldwin Co. later changed to Jasper Co., 1819 James Glisson listed in Clark Co. as Ensign, (note: this may be James Glosson who married Jennie Shaw). The following is list of possible children of James Glisson: 1- Mary b.abt 1810, 2- Martha b. abt 1812, 3- female b.1814 4-Nathaniel Matthew b. 1816, 5- Amos b. 1818, 6- Barsheba b. 1820.
John B. or Brinkley Glisson b. 1760-1770 d. aft 1830? son of either Abraham or Frederick. John B. & or Brinkley may have been the same person or there may have been a John B. and a Brinkley Glisson. Not much on who his children were. John B. or Brinkley Glisson listed in the following records, 1786 Brinkley Glisson witnessed land sale in Duplin Co. NC., then came to GA with father? , 1793 John B. Glisson with Dennis listed on tax list in Chatham Co., 1796 Brinkley Glisson listed on Headright & bounty Grants in Burke Co., 1805 Brinkley Glisson listed in land lottery for Scriven Co., 1807 B. Glisson witnessed a court record where Joseph Glisson was appointed lawyer for Simon Lewis in Bulloch Co., 1808 tax list of Chatham Co. listed John Glisson as tax defaulter, 1808 mortuary records in Savannah, Chatham Co. Ga stated that Rebecca dau of John B. Glisson died 22 Apr 1808, 1820 John B. Glisson of Burke Co. Land lottery for Early Co., 1821 Early Co. GA a John B. Glisson sold land to Moses Mulkey which listed this John B. Glisson's wife as Sarah, 1821 land lottery a John Glisson of Laurens or Lawrence Co. granted land in Houston Co., 1824 in Emanuel Co. a John Glisson took property of Negro John, 1827 John B. (note:John Jr.) The following is a list of possible children of John B. or Brinkley: 1- John Glisson who married Catherine Williams 3 Mar 1826 in Jasper Co., 2-Rebecca Glisson who died 1808 in Chatham Co. , 3- Brinkley Glisson b. 1812 married Amy Rigdon on 1 Oct 1837 in Crawford Co. GA, 4-Lewis Gleason married Lotia Garrell on 16 Oct 1842 in Crawford Co. GA, 5-Wiley Glisson b.1818-20 who married Tersa Ann Yates and lived in Gadsen Co. FL and Decatur Co. GA could be a son or grandson of John B. or of Joseph below. 6-Levin Glisson b. 1813-19 may also have been a son of John B. Much work needs to be done on this family.
Dennis Glisson b. 1760-1770 d. bef 1836 married to Mary Stuart b. 1782 d.18 Jul 1836. Listed in the following records, 1787 Dennis & Abraham Glisson witnessed land purchase for Frederick Glisson in Burke Co. , 1787 Dennis & Frederick Glisson witnessed land sale for Abraham Glisson in Burke Co., 1790 Dennis Glisson in Burke Co. listed on Reconstructed Census for GA, 1793 Dennis Glisson on tax list in Chatham Co., 1796 Dennis Glisson Land Grant in Franklin Co., 1796 Dennis Glisson listed as tax defaulter in Burke Co., 1814-19 Dennis Glisson listed on Muster Roll for Burke Co., 1819-20 Tax list for Tattnall Co. list Joseph Glisson of Tattnall Co. for Dennis Glisson land in Burke Co., 1820 Dennis Glisson listed in Census for Burke Co. GA dau of Dennis Glisson & Mary Stuart. The following is a possible list of children of Dennis Glisson & Mary Stuart: 1- Dennis Jr. b. 1790-1800 listed in 1821 Land lottery Burke Co. Joseph Glisson b. 1760-70 d. 1830-38 married (1) 1788 to ? married (2) Martha Bowen b. 1777 d. aft 1870. Listed in the following records, 1796 Joseph & Dennis Glisson tax defaulters Burke Co., 1800 & 1804 land purchase Bulloch Co., 1805 land lottery Bulloch Co., 1806-07-08 land purchases Bulloch Co., 1807 appointed lawyer Jasper Co. & witness to land purchase in Jasper Co. Hinton Glisson b. 1801 d. 1860-70 married 1825 in Duplin Co. NC to Celia Turnage b.1805 d. 1860-70.
Hinton was probably son of Daniel Glisson &
2nd wife Sarah Elizabeth Kornegay, grandson of John Glisson and
great-grand son of Dennis Glisson of Tyrrell, Beautfort and Duplin Co. NC. Thus
Hinton was a cousin to the above Glissons but came to GA much later than they
did. Hinton was listed in 1830 Duplin Co. NC Census, 1840 Wayne Co. NC Census
and 1850 Warren Co. GA Census, and 1860 Jefferson Co. GA Census. He probably left
NC and arrived in GA about 1848. The following is a list of possible children
of Hinton Glisson & Celia Turnage: 1-Sarah E. b.1826, 2- female ?, 3- male
?, 4- female ? 5- George H.B. b.1837, 6-John Haywood b.1835-39, 7-Daniel
b.1841-43, 8- Margaret J. b.1843-45, 9-Catherine b.1847-48, 10-Mary J. b.
1848-49, 11-Zilpha H or A b.1850.
Wiley Glisson b.1818 d. 1887 m.abt 1840 to Tersa Ann Yates b.1822 d.1870-80. Wiley's father is hard to ascertain. He could be a son or even a grandson of John B. or Brinkley Glisson or Joesph of Bulloch & Tattnall. Could not find him in the 1850 Census. In 1860 Census his family lived in Gadsen Co. FL, in 1870 & 1880 they lived in Decatur Co. GA. His descendants seem to have moved back and forth from FL to GA. The following is a list of possible children of Wiley Glisson: 1- Eleanor Jane b.1841, 2- Elbert b.1844, 3- Elisha b.1846, 4- Ebenezer B. b.1848, 5-Noah Jasper b.1849, 6-Matilda b.1852, 7- Amanda b.1855, 8-Leven E. b.1858, 9-Wiley b.1859, 10-Charlotte b.1861, 11- Alexander Larry b. 1863, 12-John Jarius b.1866.
There were some other groups who came to Georgia but not enough info to put in family groups.
Following are the family groups of- John B. or Brinkley, Dennis, and 3 generation for Joseph, Hinton and Wiley. Also listed separately are more extensive family groups for children of Joseph Glisson namely Henry Glisson and his children Joseph, Henry W., Sarah, and James A., male Glisson whose widow Elizabeth later married James P. Daniels and his children John B., David A, Daniel and Virginia, Moses M. Glisson and his children Mary Ann, Obediah Moses, Levi Watson, Elizabeth America, Mary A., and James H. , Unknown Glisson of Burke Co. GA with sons Rowan, William W., Henry H., James T., and Thadeus who were possible brothers, Also listed is family of George Henley Glisson and family of Franklin Stephen Glisson parents unknown.
The family of James son of either Abraham or Frederick is listed with the Florida family groups as are more extensive family groups for Riley, Bryant W., male Glisson who had widow Sarah children of Joseph above. The family of Levin Glisson is with the MS family groups.
Brothers and Sisters of Abraham &
Frederick and their parents can be found in the NC references and family
