Duplin County, North Carolina Will Book A, p. 209
In the name of God, Amen. The twenty first day of September in the year of our
Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven. I Stephen
Herring of the County of Duplin in the State of North Carolina, being
aged and in a weak and low state of bodily health but of sound and disposing
mind and memory, Blessed be God, and considering the mortality of my body and
knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die Do make and ordain this my
last will and testament, in manner and form following that is to say. I
recommend my soul to God who gave it me and my body to the earth from whence it
came to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereinafter named.
And as to such worldly estate, as God hath been pleased to bless me with in
this life, I give and dispose of in manner and form following. First it is my
will and desire that all my just debts and funeral charges be duly paid by my
executors, for which purpose it is my will that they sell such part of the crop
as may be conveniently spared, and if not sufficient to hire out immediately
such of the negros as they may think proper for that purpose till sufficient is
raised thereby to discharge all said debts. Second it is my will and desire
that the plantation whereon I now live and the lands thereto belonging and
adjoining be equally divided by a line beginning on the main run of Goshen
Swamp and running thence out by the lower corner of the New Run field, and so
on a straight line to the back line, so as to divide equally in quantity and my
son Stephen Bright
Herring to have the lower part joining the Hodges line, to him and his
heirs and assigns forever. And that my son Alexander
Herring shall have the other part which includes my houses and
plantation, to him and his heirs and assigns forever. Reserving nevertheless
the whole of my son Alexander's part to the use and benefit of my wife Sarah Herring during her life, and also the
privlige of cutting timber on the other part. It is also my will and desire
that if either of my said two sons should die without legal issue, that in such
case the other brother shall inherit the whole of said land hereby divided
between them. Third it is my will and desire that my negro slaves to wit, Caisar,
Bet, Agga, and Ned by and remain with my wife Sarah
Herring on the plantation, in her service and for her use during her
life. It is also my will and desire that all my household furniture of every
kind and all my plantation tools of every kind and all the stock of every kind,
that is horses, cattle, sheep, hoggs, etc be left with my wife Sarah Herring on the plantation, for her use
during her life (except such articles as shall be herein after otherwise
disposed of or bequeathed. And after my said wife decease it is my will and
desire that my said negro man Ned shall be given to my daughter
Aletha Harrell, for the use of her children to
them and to their heirs and assigns forever. And it is also my will and desire
that the other negro slaves to wit, Ceasar, Bet, and Agga shall not be sold but
may chose which of my children each of them will live with during their life
and all the household furniture, plantation tools and stock of every kind which
shall be found of that which I have hereby left for the use of my said wife
during her life, shall immidiately after her cecease be sold by my executors at
their discrition and the proceeds of said sale to be equally divided into two
equal shares and one of said shares shall be given to my grandson Elisha Herring son of Samuel Herring to him
and his heirs forever. And the other share shall be given to the children of my
daughter Alithea Harrell to be equally divided
amongst them for their use, to them and their heirs forever. Item I give and

to them and their heirs forever with all their increase for which purpose it is
my will and desire that my son Stephen B.Herring shall purchase for the children of

Killed by Lightning- The inhabitants of our town
were deeply shocked and pained on Thursday evening last, by the sudden and
fearful death by a lightning stroke, of Mr. Daniel Glisson, an estimable young
gentleman of our community who had just attained his majority. Mr. Glisson had,
we understand, driven into town for his mail on the afternoon in question, and
was passing on the street just in front of Mr. H. F. Newbury/Es store, when a
bolt struck a tree under which he was passing, killing him instantly. His body
was conveyed to the residence of his brother-in-law, Mr. M.cEvans, where the
funeral services were held on Friday afternoon by Rev. J.N. Stallings. Mr.
Glisson leaves his aged parents and a large circle of relatives and friends to
mourn his untimely end. (note: probably son of Benjamin Bennet Glisson &
Mary Glisson of Sampson then Duplin Co. NC.)

HINES, William & wife, Elizabeth
1) Petition of William HINES, of Wayne Co. states he was united in the bonds of
matrimony to Elizabeth GRADDY in Jan. 1825. He well hoped to derive happiness
and comfort, but soon after their marriage his said wife became very perverse and contrary, refusing to your petitioner the rights
and privileges of a
husband. She would often absent herself from his bed and board for several
weeks and carried with her the property of your petitioner, which she pretenedt
to claim as her own. When at his home, she utterly neglected to attend to the
well management of the kitchen household affairs and other duties incident to a
married woman. She continued to conduct herself in this manner,a nd in early
1832, left his bed and board and removed herself to the state of Kentucky where
she now resides. A few days past he received a letter from the said Elizabeth
couched in the most insulting manner by declaring that she would not go back
with him if he came there for her and Prays for a divorce. She gave a strong
intimation of an intention to marry again. Prays for a divorce.
Sworn to before James GRISWOLD, JP, 4 DEc. 1835.
Below: Deposition of Dinnis S. GLISSON that the
facts in the above petition are true. Dated 4 Dec. 1835. (From GASR Nov.-Dec.

Petition To Free John Barfield In the Year of 1848 To His Excellency William A. Graham Governor &c
The petition of the undersigned Citizens of the State and
particularly of the Counties of Wayne, Sampson, Duplin, Johnston &
Cumberland respectfully sheweth unto your Excellency that John Barfield
of the County of Wayne is now lying in Jail awaiting execution under
sentence of death for the murder of Alfred Flowers.
Your petitioners shew unto your Excellency that (as they believe)
the homicide of said Flowers occured in a drunken brawl, that the liquor
which caused the intoxication of said Barfield was furnished by said
Flowers who knew the habits of said Barfield and his excessive fondness
for liquor, that Flowers was a man of violent and turbulent disposition
and by his conduct greatly excited and aggravated the said Barfield.
Your petitioners further show unto your Excellency that the
prosecution of said Barfield has cost him his whole estate and that he
has suffered the pains of solitary imprisonment for nearly three years,
they further beg leave to inform your Excellency that the people of the
said Counties are very generally of the opinion that the said Barfield
has suffered sufficiently to atone for his rash & criminal act; that he
is sencerely penitent for his offence and finally that some of the
bereaved relatives of the deceased would be willing that the said
Barfield should be exempted from the ignominious death of the gallows,
provided he leave the State, which he would be willing to do.
For all these reasons pray your Excellency to extend your
clemency to the said Barfield by a pardon on such terms as your
Excellency may think fit to impose.

Sons were: Edward, Jesse, Jacob Sr, Flowers, and
Thomas Jr. Other spellings of surname in the records are Sumrell, Summerlin,
Sumrall.
All the sons listed above
are referred to in the records with the Summerlin spelling by 1790. I am
particularly interested in Jesse Summerell/Summerlin who married Mary Glisson,
daughter of Dennis & Mary Glisson. Jesse appears in the the 1760s tax
records of
Pitt Co NC. The James Hines
text on the family is the source for the marriage between Mary Glisson and
Jesse Summerlin. Mary
Summerlin next appears in
Duplin County NC records in 1786 and later years. She is listed in the Duplin
County Court of Pleas records
as having "three
suffering orphans" in her household.

Bible Record of Martha Glisson & Isaac Middleton- furnished by Amanda
Middleton Pardew-
Copy of this bible in possession of Mairlyn
Davis, email address moose_205@yahoo.com-
Martha Gleason married Isaac Middleton in Duplin
Co. NC. Bible states she had brother Hugh and brother Brinkley and sister
Elizabeth (Betty) that married John Norman. It states that Martha was
born in Scotland and that her mothers maiden name was Dennison. (note: I
am trying to get copy of this bible record. Martha Gleason obviously
should be Martha Glisson. Facts about the listings in this bible are that
Martha married Isaac Middleton and they went to Henry Co. TN by 1834 when Isaac
died. Elizabeth married John Norman who was son of Richard Norman &
Martha Middleton. Elizabeth & John married 1828 in Duplin Co. NC then
went to Henry Co. TN by at least 1835. Brinkley Glisson married 1831 in
Henry Co. TN. There was an H. Gleason in 1860 Census age 41 living alone
in Henry Co. TN but No other info on Hugh Glisson. This could be
him.) I previously was told that Elizabeth was dau of Daniel Glisson
& 2nd wife Elizabeth Kornegay but I doubt that with this new
information. I now believe that Martha, Elizabeth, Brinkley and Hugh were
siblings but parents unknown. There are several of right age that I have
no info on that could be their father in Duplin Co. NC. Another
possibility is That James Glisson of Martin Co. NC who went to Weakley and
Henry Co. TN was their father. But I do not think this James ever went to
Duplin Co. NC. He was son of Isaac Glisson & gson of Dennis
& Mary Glisson. This James did leave a will in Henry Co. TN listing
some of his children. A Martha Mcdditen could not read could be Martha
Middleton, and listed a Elizabeth Neruecu could not read could be Elizabeth
Norman. Also listed was a Dennis Glisson, heirs of Nancy F. Lake,
Boddy Leesley could not read, James Glisson. No Brinkley and no Hugh
Glisson. Dennis Glisson & Brinkley Glisson and Martha Middleton lived
next to each other in Henry Co. TN and seemed to be connected. I even
originally had Brinkley as son of James. I will update this as I get new
info. I now
believe that the above were children of James Glisson. Also other siblings.

Ref: David
Edwards (c1764-1839) and Lydia --- of Wayne Co, NC
Submitted by Marty &
Carla Grant I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of David and
Lydia (---) Edwards.
David Edwards was born ca
1763/64 per his age of "71" as given on the 1835 Pensioners Census.
In an affidavit dated 22 Aug 1832, David Edwards stated he was 69 years old. That would work out
to a birth year of either 1762 or 1763. Combine this with the 1835 census, and
you get ca 1763 as a likely birth year for him.
I don't know where David
Edwards was born, though the first record I have for his parents was 1769 in Dobbs County, now
Lenoir County,
so he may have been born there, somewhere in the vicinity of present day
Kinston (where I currently reside, coincidentally).
David Edwards a proven child
of John
Edwards, and was named in his father's Will of 1810.
David Edwards was a
Revolutionary War Soldier, and a Pensioner. His pension file contains some
information about his service. I'll present a summarized version here. He was
drafted for 12 months in 1781 or 1782, under Captain Thomas Shute at Kinston,
NC, "his place of residence". He stayed at Kinston for a number of
days, then marched to Elizabeth (Elizabethtown) in Bladen County, then to
Ashpole, then to Peedee, SC. Then he marched to Deep River, NC where they built
a Fort. Then they marched to Haw River. Then they marched to Hillsboro, NC. His
year of service ended while he was in Hillsboro, and he was discharged. He
named several officers he served under: Major Bennett Crafton, His Captain at
first was Captain Shute, his Lieut. was named Bilbary, and Ensign David Glisson. Orderly Sergeant was John M--gan (Morgan?). In
Elizabeth (Elizabethtown) he was placed under the command of Captain Norris
Raiford and continued under him until discharged at Hillsboro, NC. Further, in
his pension application, he stated he was 69 years old, and he was impaired by
numerous ills of life. He mentioned James McDaniel as a fellow soldier who knew
him and could vouch for his service. His pension request was granted. (Revolutionary War Pension File - S6812 David Edwards
1832, National Archives).
