Revolutionary
War Military Abstract Card File - {series #13.50}
Arranged alphabetically by surname of soldier. The abstract card file contains
transcriptions of data extracted from original records in the custody of the
State Archives concerning Revolutionary War service in the Pennsylvania
Militia, Pennsylvania Line, and the Navy. Note that duty after November 1783 is
not considered Revolutionary War service. Information provided is name and rank
of soldier, whether active or inactive duty, county of residence, battalion in
which served, and record from which information was
extracted. Also noted are whether soldier was delinquent and fined or whether
militia fines were abated.
The entry "Active Duty" indicates that the soldier saw active duty in
either the Pennsylvania Militia or the Pennsylvania Line while "Inactive
Duty" indicates that the soldier did not necessarily see active duty.
Associators were volunteers who comprised the Military Association, a civilian
reserve designed to repel any invasion of Pennsylvania until the collapse of
the Association in the winter of 1776-1777. The Pennsylvania Militia was
organized under an Act of the Assembly of March 17, 1777 that required
compulsory enrollment by constables of all able-bodied white males between the
ages of 18 and 53 to repel invaders. The "Flying Camps" were special
battalions of Pennsylvania Line troops recruited from the Pennsylvania
Associators. Rangers were soldiers who served long periods of enlistment to
protect the frontier against Indian incursions. Entries for Depreciation Pay
Certificates apply to soldiers who served 1777-1780 when the currency was
depreciating and were paid in Continental Bills of Credit that quickly lost
value. To compensate for such depreciation, each soldier of the Pennsylvania
Line who remained in service in 1781 was awarded a substantial sum in
Depreciation Pay Certificates which were both interest bearing and negotiable.
In addition, at the end of the war arrears and allowances due were met by
issuing to each soldier still in service a number of interest-bearing final
settlements called Pierce's Certificates (named after the paymaster who
dispensed them).
Some cards show a certificate number that relates to the Militia Loan of
1784-1785. This loan was established to pay individuals for services and goods
provided during the Revolutionary War that had not been reimbursed at that
time. Note that not all certificate numbers give additional information.

Baptisms
Thos Glifson son of Caleb & Sarah Glafson was born 8th of March 1783 & was bapt Nov 17, 1785 (my note: Thomas Glisson is my ggg gf, for over 20 years I theorized that his parents were Caleb Glisson & Sarah Wiggins by deduction that Thomas named son Caleb and daughter Sarah Wiggins plus other reason , this baptism now proves my theory without any doubt. Also his dob listed is exactly same as his bible record which I have copy of and is listed on this website under Glisson bible records. Also, from a reference of Knox Co. ILL, Thomas’s son Thomas Runyan Glisson stated his father was born in Carlisle, Cumberland Co. PA, That threw me off course for many years. I now believe he was born in Philadelphia, Caleb & Sarah Wiggins were married on 14 Dec 1782 at the Swedes Church in Philadelphia, Caleb listed on Post REV War Muster Rol
1784 Philadelphia City. Caleb & Sarah’s son Thomas & dau Hannah baptized 1785 in Philadelphia, Caleb list on Post REV muster roll 1789 in Philadelphia. Thus I am quite confident Thomas b.1783 was born in Philadelphia and above reference to Carlise is in error. Sarah Wiggins father Thomas did have land in Carlise, so maybe Caleb & Sarah left Philadelphia after 1789 and lived in Carlisle. Or may below note on marriage of Sarah Glisson to William Steel is correct about Sarah maybe being widow of Caleb and she remarried William Steel whose family was from Carlisle.)
Han Glifson daughter of Caleb & Sarah Glifson was born 10th of October 1784 & bapt Nov 17, 1785 (my note: I did have one reference I obtains in Carlisle Pa Historical Society, where a Hannah Glisson died in 1840 in Harrisburg married to Jacob Wright, age 56, but I lost the record this from memory, at time I remember thinking this could be a sister of Thomas. I think that record was above Han Glifson. Need to find that record again)

Sarah Glisson to William Steel 1 Aug 1793 (my note: this Sarah Glisson prob born before 1775, which would make her a grand daughter of Thomas b.1705 and Mary? Dau of either Thomas b.1747, or one of his brothers. Or one other possibility, just theory, Could she be Sarah Wiggins and widow of Caleb Glisson b.abt 1759. Last record I find on Caleb is 1789 in Philadelphia, post rev war solder. At this time.)

While on the blockade of Wilmington, N.C., he burned a Confederate "light-boat" so near to Fort Caswell that the sentinels could be heard giving challenges. In 1863 he commanded the Mohican in pursuit of the privateer Alabama. He participated in both attacks on Fort Fisher in December, 1864, and in January, 1865, commanding the 3d division of the fleet. After the war he commanded at the League Island naval station from 1867 to June 10, 1870, when he was appointed rear-admiral and placed in command of the European squadron. He was retired Jan. 18, 1871, and made his home in Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Nov. 20, 1890.
